Summary: The Director of Strategic Marketing provides Marketing leadership to the university community. In cooperation with the VP for Communication and Integrated Marketing, advises and assists senior administration and academic leadership in establishing goals, developing effective strategies and tactics, implementing programs and evaluating results. Designs, coordinates, and evaluates university marketing programs and projects by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Takes an active role in the development of university marketing plans, under the direction of the VP for Communication and Integrated Marketing.
  • Does photography and coordinates the work of photographers and videographers; ensures that photos are appropriately archived.
  • Plans and carries out advertising and promotional activities using print, online and electronic media and direct mail.
  • Develops new media (web, Facebook, Twitter, other) to support marketing endeavors.
  • Works closely with clients on their marketing strategy, ensuring that marketing projects are delieverd on-time, on-budget, and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Organizes and carries out a systematic program of market research.
  • Monitors competitive products and marketing activities.
  • Keeps current on general and higher education marketing trends and competitor moves.
  • Assists in the development of the university "brand" ensuring that the messages and images are consistently conveyed.
  • Writes or supervises writing content for marketing publications, advertising, and other projects, working closely with clients.
  • Handles graphic design for marketing needs - either by doing it or by coordinating the work of freelance artists as appropriate.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key community and strategic partners.
  • Prepares marketing activity reports for VP for Communication and Integrated Marketing.

    Competency:
    Incumbent will be able to translate goals/policies into operational plans and procedures through the administration of a University function. Will have latitude for independence of action within the function of the position and is directly accountable for accomplishment of the function.
    Qualifications:

    Education/Experience:
    Bachelor's degree and a minimum of one to three years related experience. A master's degree in communication, marketing or related field is preferred.
    Language Ability:
    Strong writing ability is essential. Must be a highly accurate proofreader. Must be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers. Ability to write marketing material and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to write for the web.
    Math Ability:
    Ability to do math in order to ensure that budget and billing records are accurate.
    Reasoning Ability:
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    Computer Skills:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual should be competent in using the Microsoft Office Suite. Competent in using InDesign and Photoshop, and web authorizing programs is highly desired.
    Certificates and Licenses:
    Valid CA Driver License
    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    Will share supervision of student workers. Will coordinate the work of freelance professionals and work with printers.
