Under the direction of the Campus Architect/Assistant Vice
Chancellor of Planning, Design & Construction, the Director of
Capital Planning is responsible for managing the capital planning
unit in providing the campus with planning services in support of
creation and implementation of the campus capital improvement
program, including annual update of the long-range Capital
Financial Plan, and strategizing implementation of major
renovations, new construction, infrastructure and landscape
projects, and capital renewal. This position advises the Campus
Architect and the Vice Chancellor of Planning, Budget &
Administration in assessing and prioritizing campus capital needs
and responding to directives related to the capital program from
the UC Office of the President. The Director supervises and manages
the work assignments of professional capital planning staff,
working closely with Environmental Planning, Physical Planning,
Project Management, the Campus Architect, Financial Planning &
Analysis and the office of the Chief Financial & Administrative
Officer (CFAO) to ensure consistency with University and campus
policy and process to obtain appropriate capital and financial
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent
Master's degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City
Planning or other planning-related field.
6 - 10 years of related experience.
5 years of capital planning and/or project management experience
with an institution of higher education or similar environments
that includes experience with planning for research laboratories,
instructional space, student housing, and infrastructure
Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
Occasional in-state travel for training, typically conducted at UC
Office of the President or other UC campuses.
Periodic in-state or out-of-state travel for professional
Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check through
the DOJ and FBI prior to appointment start date.
Ability to operate University vehicles for business and operational
Ability to possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in
accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Solid knowledge/skill in comprehensive complex planning operations
Solid interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and
written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness,
advising and counseling skills.
Demonstrated organizational, analytical, written and interpersonal
communication skills, including strong negotiating skills and
highly developed political acumen.
Broad knowledge of planning, design, construction, environmental
issues, legal issues, federal, state and local laws, regulations
and practices governing planning, and state/federal legislative
