Mortgage Loan Officer, Real Estate Lending

Job Title: Mortgage Loan Officer

Department: Real Estate Lending

Classification: Exempt


A Mortgage Loan Officer is responsible for originating first trust deed loans (1st mortgages) in accordance with investor requirements, as well as cross selling the member additional products and services with Altura Credit Union and its Affiliate. Interacts and assists members & non-members in completing a loan application. Collects the required documentation, perform loan qualification and pre/approvals after preliminary analysis. Accountable for all the conditions set forth in the Compensation Agreement

Assists the member in determining the proper loan program, completing the loan application and gathering the necessary paperwork, including pay stubs, tax returns and bank statements, to begin the loan process


Follow up on leads/referral and past members for new business


Manage pipeline by communicating with processing and providing updates to the member


Cultivating relationships with real estate agents, financial planners, accountants, and others to bring in new business

  • High school diploma or its equivalent is required.

  • Undergraduate degree with major coursework in accounting, finance or a related field is preferred

  • Three (3) years' experience working as a mortgage loan originator, or in a similar position in mortgage lending is required.

  • Two years' experience with conforming, nonconforming and alternative loan products and pricing is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of selling and servicing activities and requirements.

  • Ability to evaluate credit applications, credit reports, title reports, appraisals, insurance documents and determinations to determine appropriateness of loan product in conjunction with investor requirements.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology, including automated mortgage processing systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to produce documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. with Windows-based software.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and use computer-based credit scoring programs.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with the use of computer technology

  • Including Mortgage Bot and other Mortgage based software.

  • Point knowledge of principles and process for providing customer service and for promoting

  • and selling conventional FHA, VA and adjustable loan products and services.

  • Strong customer service skills, as well as strong telephone etiquette skills.

  • Excellent presentation skills; ability to conduct presentations to individuals.

  • Ability to type 40 WPM and the ability to type up to 70% of a workday.

  • Ability to operate a 10-key calculator and the ability to use the calculator up to 50% of a workday.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with changing priorities while meeting heavy deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with Altura Credit Union members, as well as credit union staff and management.

  • Ability to be Bondable through Altura's Credit Union bonding company.

  • Ability to be registered on the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act) registry.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to travel as required.

  • Ability to persuade and motivate others.

  • Ability to be conscientious, thorough, precise and care about accuracy and details.

  • Ability to work at a fast pace and display a sense of urgency to members and employees.


  • Spanish required


  • Proficient math skills - ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate averages and percentages.


  • High level of reasoning capability and problem resolution skills, with the ability to collect, compile, and analyze information and present data in an understandable format to management and employees.

  • Ability to make sound decisions under extreme circumstances with confidence and firmness after assembling facts and weighing alternative solutions.

  • Ability to use good judgment in setting priorities and carrying out duties under limited supervision.

  • The ability to sit at a desk, use a computer by typing on a keyboard or 10-key calculator for 80% of the workday, file and retrieve documents from a file cabinet, and occasionally leave the work station to walk around to deliver mail and other documents to other work areas.

  • This position requires the ability to stand for 20% of the workday.

  • The ability to use the arms to lift storage boxes of files onto shelving overhead twice a week.

  • This job does not require a person to lift and/or move more than 30 pounds. Personal protection equipment is available.
