Position Summary:

The Nurse Navigator/Orthopedic CNS’s primary responsibility is to develop and assure quality of care for the orthopedic patient and functions as a member of the multidiciplinary team serving as an advocate and educator for orthopedic/spine surgery patients. The Orthopedic CNS is a valuable resource for staff development as an expert clinician as well as a resource to organizations and systems in improving quality and conserving resources. The Orthopedic CNS will be accountable for providing, developing, coordinating and implementing educational programs designed to convey specialized knowledge and skills to nursing personnel, as well as care coordination for all Orthopedic patients. The Orthopedic CNS is also accountable for developing, implementing, and evaluating orthopedic related competencies for staff caring for orthopedic patients on an annual basis. The Orthopedic CNS will have access to all Patient Health Information for treatment purposes only. Performance evaluation specifics listed below. 

Reports To: Surgical/Orthopedic Nursing Director

Supervises: None

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Current California License as a Registered Nurse
2.    Masters preferred, licensed Clinical Nurse Specialist or CNS enrolled
3.    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
4.    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
5.    Specialty certification (i.e. ONC, ONC-A, ONP-C), preferred.

EDUCATION:

RN with CNS or Masters Degree preferred
 

EXPERIENCE:

Five years acute care experience, including orthopedic nursing. Recent experience functioning as a CNS in a clinical setting preferred.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

Leadership, problem solving skills, flexibility, judgment, teamwork, interactive skills, work habits, productivity, and customer service. Knowledge of current theory, principle/procedures and injury prevention concepts specific to orthopedic populations. Skill in providing care to orthopedic patients and their families. Setting and monitoring the delivery of evidence-based patient care standards and making recommendations for changes in clinical practice. Guiding / directing nursing staff in assessing patient/family age-specific nursing needs and developing interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high-risk patients. Collaborating with assigned nursing staff and other ancillary services to identify patients needs and to serve as a role model to demonstrate expected clinical practice. Collaboration focusing on multidisciplinary team building.
