Under the general supervision of the Network Operations Manager,
the Network Technician will install, configure, and support the
campus voice and data (wired and wireless) networks. The incumbent
is responsible for responding to both requests and incidents as
they are assigned and ensures that the service is on line. Updates
campus documentation and records time and inventory utilized in
each job. Maintains voice and data network hardware and responds to
weekly Dig Alerts. Interact with campus Stakeholders and act as a
representative of the ITS Network Department. Collaborate with
other campus staff in order to complete projects requiring multiple
This position is classified as on-site. This is a TWO YEAR CONTRACT
position. Should additional funding be made available in the
future, the contract could be extended or the position converted to
a permanent career position.

Degree Requirement Bachelor's degree in related area and/or

Required Travel Outside of Normal Business Hours Required Overtime
Required Shift Work (hours outside standard Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM work
hours) Required Travel is necessary around the UCR campus as well
as to UCR satellite sites (e.g. Palm Desert Campus, remote research
sites) to perform the necessary functions of the job. This position
may be driving their own vehicle or a university-owned vehicle.
Required Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in
accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, if
driving a university/personal vehicle for university related
business. Required Occasional travel for university related
business meetings, conferences and/or professional development.
Stay abreast of advances in communications technology to include
reading technical manuals, and specifications to evaluate products
and determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with
existing systems and make recommendations.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills of moderate scope and
Ability to monitor data and voice systems and related peripherals'
performance and capacity and provide recommendations,
troubleshooting, and maintenance for optimal system
Basic understanding of various network hardware platforms, network
related protocols and software including basic understanding of OSI
layer 2 protocols and related technical standards critical to the
operation of interconnected networks.
Knowledge and ability to effectively perform and document
moves/adds/changes to voice and data system infrastructure to
include TDM-based voice systems, IP Telephony, Unified
Communications, and LANs.
Demonstrated skills necessary to develop and maintain online
documentation in support of campus voice and data systems to
include workbooks, diagrams, processes, and procedures.
Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Basic knowledge of professional communications and network concepts
in completion of assignments and resolution of issues.
Experience working with network diagnostic and performance
management tools and software.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to safety practices for

Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a
variety of functional assignments.
