Homelessness is the largest social and public health crisis in
California. Illumination Foundation (IF) is a growing non-profit
organization dedicated towards disrupting the cycle of homelessness
by providing targeted, interdisciplinary services in our
recuperative care centers, emergency shelters, housing services and
children's and family programs. IF currently has 13+ facilities
with 22+ micro-communities scattered across Orange County, Los
Angeles County and the Inland Empire.
Job Description:
The Substance Use Technician provides clinically sound, harm
reduction-based substance use counseling
services to all clients served by IF.
Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Within a Harm Reduction Model complete substance use
assessment, treatment planning, goal setting, and discharge
planning to clients interested in services
- Provide individual and group counseling to clients struggling
with substance abuse
- Recognize the need for and provide crisis intervention to
clients
- Complete ACE's Assessment and other related assessments as
indicated
- Initiate CIWA's as needed
- Within 5 days of service provision, documents all client
interactions or activities completed on behalf of the client
(including collaboration with other disciplines, case
consultations, telephone calls, leaving voicemails, and collateral
contact) in KIPU
- Meet documentation standards as assigned by Clinical
Supervisor, Manager or Director
- Inform Associate Manager, Manager or Director, within 12 hours
of making an incident report, APS/CPS report and complete required
APS/CPS reports within the mandated time frame
- Collaborate (on a need to know basis) with teams including
site, nursing, case management, behavioral health therapists, food
service and transportation regarding client's substance use
counseling needs, ensuring the highest level of client care
- Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and
materials according to HIPAA standards
- Drive to any IF location for coverage, trainings, or support,
as directed
- Research and build relationships with community agencies for
client resources and linkage
- Familiarization with supportive services in county/counties
served, including but not limited to linking clients to outside
therapy, psychiatry, substance use treatment, job training,
schooling, church, AA/NA Meetings, etc
- Support volunteers as needed; may be required to supervise
volunteer(s)
- Possess an understanding, and demonstrate a passion for meeting
the needs of the low-income, dual diagnosis, homeless
population
- Demonstrate knowledge of and incorporate trauma informed care,
motivational Interviewing, and the wellness and recovery models
when assessing and treating clients
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity to the needs of staff and
clients
- Ability to conduct clinically sound substance use assessments,
treatment planning and discharge planning
- Ability to work with ambiguity and solve complex problems by
utilizing critical thinking, creativity, thinking outside of the
box, and flexibility
- Ability to work independently, stay calm, use good judgment and
effective communication in crisis situations
- Demonstrate superior organizational skills, thoroughness and
attention to detail
- Ability to make decisions, meet targets and work under
pressure
- Be a self-starter, skilled at working with little
direction
- Demonstrate and foster a positive attitude toward change
- Demonstrate tactful and diplomatic communication skills with
clients and team members
- Ability to manage, coordinate and collaborate with others
(clients, staff and community agencies) in a multidisciplinary
setting
- Build supportive relationships in community/actively search out
relevant resources
- Advanced knowledge of, and ability to comply with, HIPPA
regulations and professional ethics
Preferred Experience/Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of experience working with homeless and dual
diagnosis (mental illness and comorbid substance abuse problem)
populations.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English is helpful, highly
desirable
- Basic computer skills including the ability to prepare simple
correspondence and reports in Microsoft Word, and summarize and
report data in Excel spreadsheets.
Experience:
- Addiction counseling: 1 year (Required)
License/Certification:
- RAD-T, CADC-I, CADC-II, LAADC, or LAADC-S
